About Alexander Nichols
Biography
From: Huling genealogy: descendants of James and Margaret Huling of Newport, Rhode Island and Lewes, Delaware
by Esther Littleford Woodworth-Barnes 198. pages 63, 64
Alexander Nichols, son of Elizabeth Huling and her husband James Nichols, was born 28 January 1717/8 at East Greenwich, R.I. and died there between 16 August 1784, when he made his will, and 26 April 1788, when it was proven.
Alexander, of East Greenwich, and Mercy Spencer were married at North Kingstown, 13 July [probably 1740], by Thomas Hill, Justice of the Peace. Mercy was the daughter of William Spencer (John) and his wife Elizabeth (?Jenkins), born 20, 6th month 1707 (Friends Records). William Spencer mentioned his grandson William Nichols in his will recorded 25 October 1748. Much of that will is burned and broken (NK Probate 8:198-202).
Alexander was married, second, to Sarah (Gardiner) Gould of Exeter, at Exeter, 29 January 1743/4 by Benoni Hall, Justice. Sarah was born at Exeter 5 May 1716, the daughter of Isaac and Elizabeth (Davis) Gardiner, and died 20 March 1752 at East Greenwich. She was first married to John Gould, son of John and Elizabeth (Gardiner) Gould, born about 1707, and they had children, Sarah, Elizabeth, and Ann, recorded without dates at South Kingstown. John Gould's will was probated 9 June 1741, but the date of the will is burned away; it mentions a child with which his wife was then pregnant (NK Probate 7:187-189). Isaac Gardiner, grandfather to Sarah and Ann Gould, was appointed their guardian and another granddaughter, Elizabeth, chose him for her guardian (Exeter TC 1 [1743-1756], p.138).
Alexander Nichols' third wife, was evidently Sarah Browning, the daughter of Samuel and Mary Browning, born at North Kingstown 11 September [torn] and the sister of Isaac Browning. She died probably in early 1800.
In his will dated 16 August 1784 and probated 26 April 1788, Alexander Nichols named his wife Sarah and gave the homestead farm to his three sons, John, James and Isaac. He left the farm in North Kingstown, were son Isaac then lived, to sons William and Silas, and daughter Sarah Vaughan, wife of Samuel Vaughan, mentioning two sons of Sarah Vaughan, William Nichols and Alexander Vaughan. He gave twenty acres in Warwick to son James and grandson William Nichols, son of daughter Sarah Vaughan; a lot to son William, tools to three sons John, James and Isaac; mentioned his five sons and one daughter, left to grandson William Nichols his wearing apparel, one milk cow, his gun or fowling piece and writing desk. He directed that William be brought up and have suitable schooling (EG Probate 4:86,90).
Sarah Nichols, of East Greenwich, signed her will 26 January 1791 and it was recorded 15 April 1800 at South Kingstown. In it she names her sister Mercy Albro, wife of Benoni Albro, her daughter Sarah Vaughan, wife of Samuel Vaughan, her cousin Sarah Tripp, wife of Benjamin Tripp, and nieces Sarah and Abigail Browning, daughters of "my brother Isaac Browning." The Will was witnessed by George Taft, Samuel Wall, Jr., and Ebenezer Spencer (South Kingstown Probate 1:44,45).
