About Alexander Simpson Northcutt, Sr.
Alexander Simpson Northcutt was the son of Richard Northcutt and (2nd wife) Frances* who was b: abt 1780. According to DAR records, Richard Northcutt was born in 1737 in Prince William, Virginia and died 1 Oct 1781 at the Siege of Little Yorktown, Virginia. The 1820 land lottery shows a Frances Northcutt, widow, as receiving land. She was living in Oglethorpe County, GA. Also, among lottery applicants were several men named Nunneley. It has been reported that Frances's maiden name was Nunneley. Perhaps she moved with her children from Virginia to Oglethorpe Co, GA either with family members. Her son, Alexander, was married in Oglethorpe Co, GA. The Dept. of Archives, Atlanta, GA states "Alexander Northcut, Gentleman, commissioned Lieutenant of the Dist. Company of the Militia, May 2, 1808, Randolph County (later Jasper). Commissioned Capt. of the Militia in Jasper County 1819-1820." After marrying on 17 Oct 1806 (40,000 Early Georgia Marriages compiled by Maddox and Carter, 1976), Alexander and Lucy Northcutt moved to Tennessee, and a few years later, when a treaty was made with the Indians, he returned to Georgia and located in Jasper Co., where he was a prominent pioneer. U.S. War Records show that he served in the War of 1812 from Tennessee. He was in the Battle of Talledega, and also the Horse Shoe Battle, the latter in the Creek war. After the treaty had been made with the Indians and another new territory opened, he moved west to Ocmulgee River and pioneered again, opening up a farm and taking the lead in the settlement. He next migrated to Campbell Co, on the Chattahoochee River, where he settled among the Creek Indians and opened another farm. After the Cherokee purchase, he moved for the last time to Cobb Co., GA. Captain Northcutt, as that worthy pioneer was called, earned the title during his military service. He filled various positions of trust and prominence in the different localities where he had his abiding place, was public spirited, frank and generous, and was as highly respected as he was well known. from: History of Texas, 1896, Chicago: The Lewis Publishing Co
