Alexander Porterfield, Surgeon in Glasgow, was enrolled as a burgess of Glasgow on 20 May 1690, He is identified as a master (employer) in his burgess record. Burgesses: 222 He was admitted as a burgess in right of having been a serving apprentice with the deceased John Robison, apothecary surgeon in Glasgow, and he was admitted as a guild brother by the same right on 17 April 1712. Burgesses: 289

However, he is certainly known to have died intestate before 20 September 1744, the date upon which his testament dative and inventory was given up by his only son Mr. George Porterfield, Advocate.
