About Alexander Rose

Alexander ROSE, a Scot merchant, was in South Carolina before 1753 when was listed as a member of the St. Andrew's Society in Charleston.

He established himself in Charleston and Georgetown and was a co-owner of 10 merchant vessels.

Between 1770 and 1772 he obtained [land] grants totaling 2,500 acres in Craven County.

Rose settled Matanzas plantation near Georgetown.

He was elected by the voters of Price George Winyah to the Twenty-sixth Royal Assembly (1762-1765), but did not serve a complete term. Sometime during the winyer of 1764, he briefly left the province of South Carolina.

During the American Revolution, ROSE was an admitted Tory.

Alexander ROSE married January 21, 1779 Margaret SMITH, daughter of Judge William SMITH, a New York loyalist.

In 1780, ROSE congratulated General Cornwallis on his victory at Camden. His conduct was so blatant that his was the only name that Edward RUTLEDGE insisted be in the Confiscation Act. The legislature in 1782 concurred with RUTLEDGE and ROSE's estate was ordered confiscated, and he was banished. Despite [RUTLEDGE's] stance, ROSE returned to Charleston after the war and reopened his business.

In Charleston, ROSE was a member of the Charleston Library Society (1769-1801) and a director of the Reciprocal Insurance Company (1792). He was also a member of the Mount Sion Society whose purpose was to foster education in the backcountry.

Alexander ROSE died sometime during the spring of 1801. His wife, Margaret SMITH ROSE, had pre-deceased him, but he was survived by six children:
