"The fourth laird of Grandtully was Alexander Stewart, who was served heir to his father Thomas on 2d June 1462. King James the Third, by a writ under his sign-manual and privy seal at Perth, 8th July 1470, for the great favour he bore to the blood and surname of Stewart, not wishing that the heritage to which Alexander Stewart of Grandtully was born should be given away from the surname, thereby invested John Stewart, his eldest son, in fee in the lands of Grandtully; and that they might remain with the surname, also granted that, should the decease of Alexander Stewart occur while his son was in his minority, his mother, Mald Stewart, and her father John Stewart of Rannoch, and her brothers, and whomsoever she should be pleased to appoint, should have the tutory and keeping of her son till he attained majority."

There is some discrepancy between materials as to whether to consider Alexander first or second of Grandtully. e.g. William Fraser identifies Alexander as second of Grandtully (Red Book of Grandtully), while Red Book of Scotland - Stewart of Grantully identifies him as the first. For this purpose, have aligned to Pedigree of the Family of Stewart of Grandtully outlined in the above mentioned Red Book of Grandtully.
