About Alfonso Beauregard González

Found in The State 02 August 1908: Alfonso Beauregard Gonzales, who died at his brother's home in Columbia at 7 0'clock yesterday morning, after a long and painful illness, was born in Colleton county, S.C., the 30th of May 1860. He was the third son of Gen. Ambrosio José Gonzales and Harriet Rutledge Elliott.

His life was spent on the beautiful old plantation in lower Colleton, where he was born and where his people have lived for 200 years. With natural gifts that would have made a name for him in a wider field, he valued money not at all, preferring the life of a poor planter upon the soil that he loved. Though ivy and roses covered the ruins of the home that Sherman's torch had blasted, the great live oaks were left with their drapery of Spanish moss, and the call of the woods and of the fields was ever in his ears, for he loved nature and its wild things. With no thought for his own material interest, he was ever at the service of friend or neighbor, and with willing hands and willing feet he lightened many of the burdens of those who lived about him. In the trying political contests of the "black district" in which he lived, he performed, from his 16th year to mature manhood, brave and unselfish service; opening polls and managing elections under conditions that few men could be found to face. He had a wide circle of friends. Few came into contact with him who were not moved to merriment by his wit and charmed by his companionship, and hundreds of men and women throughout the State will grieve to know that he has passed from among them and that the paths he has brightened shall know him no more. His suffering for years was great, but he bore himself bravely and peace came at the end. He approached the grave "like one that draws the drapery of his couch about him, and lies down to pleasant dreams."

Mr. Gonzales is survived by two brothers and one sister, Messrs. A. E. and Wm. E. Gonzales and Miss Harriet R. E. Gonzales. The funeral services will be held this afternoon at 5:30 at Trinity church, the pallbearers being B. R. Heyward, C. M. Galloway, William Banks, F. C. withers, A. P. Brown, F. H. McMaster, Jas. A. Hoyt and E. J. Watson.
