Alfred E. "Speed" Anhalt, 74, of Kiel, died peacefully, Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2002, following surgery complications in Arizona. Born March 18, 1927 to the late Clemens and Alma Gast Anhalt, "Speed" attended Elder Grove School and graduated from Kiel High School in 1944. He began a 42-year career with Stoeltings in 1943, working his way from the machine shop to National Account Sales Manager. In 1945 he enlisted in the US Navy and served during both World War II and the Korean War.

Alfred married Sylvia Wendling on June 21, 1947 and they enjoyed 54 wonderful years together. An active community participant, Speed was a volunteer fireman in Kiel for 24 years. He belonged to the VFW #6707 and was a 4th degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus, council #9678. Alfred and Sylvia began their life in the Dairy Queen business, when they managed the Sheboygan DQ in 1962; then purchased and operated the Kiel DQ for 24 years. In 1983 they purchased the rights to develop Dairy Queens in Northeast Illinois. Alfred served as president and partner of Northeast Illinois DQ, until his retirement in 1990. Following retirement, Speed had taken the time to really enjoy his family, his grandchildren, gardening, dancing and Cedar Lake.
