ALFRED CALDWELL DEAD AT WHEELING

Several Times Members of State Legislator and Former Attorney General Dies

TRIP FOR HEALTH FAILURE

WHEELING, March 11. — Alfred Caldwell, aged 78 years, several times member of the West Virginia legislator, attorney general of the state one term and one of the leading attorneys of the state died here this morning of complications arising from old age. He had been in ill health for six months and during the winter months members of the family accompanied him for a tour of the Bermudas in the hope of restoring his health. Becoming worse at Nassau, he was rushed to New York and home Monday of this week.

Born in Wheeling, July 14, 1847, a son of Judge and Mrs. Alfred Caldwell, pioneer residents of the city, he has spent his entire life here, being intimately connected with the business and industrial development of the entire eastern panhandle.

He was educated at West Liberty academy, later entering Oahu college in Honolulu, and still later was graduated as bachelor of philosophy at Yale. He studied law under his father and was admitted to practice in 1868. He was also elected to the state senate as a Democrat in 1875, served in all branches of city council, and was city solicitor for two years.

He was a life long member of the First Presbyterian church. Fifty-five years ago, he married Miss Laura E. Goshorn, one of Wheeling's prominent families. To this union were born eight children, two of whom are dead. He was a member of the B. P.O. E. Elks and the Ohio county Bar association.

He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Laura Caldwell, one son, William G. Caldwell and the following daughters: Mrs. Otto Schroll, of Pittsburgh; Mrs. Armstead Mead, of Huntington; Mrs. Walter Davidson, of Steubenville, Ohio; Mrs. Earl Glass, of Wheeling and Miss Martha Caldwell, at home.
