Alfred fought with the Canadian military in the Second Anglo-Boer War, regimental number 2399. Alfred Sheldon of "Stafford, Eng." is listed among the Fredericton R.C.R. Infantry of "G" Company (N.B. and P.E. Island), under the command of Captain W.A. Weeks, in the book Our Boys Under Fire, or, Maritime Volunteers in South Africa, written by Annie Elizabeth Mellish. On 26 Sept. 1914, Alfred Sheldon, then 54 years old, attested to join the Canadian military in the First World War, regimental number 25016; on his attestation papers Alfred gives his age as 12 years younger than he actually was, born 19 June 1872, possibly to get around any age restrictions. In 1915, Alfred Sheldon was wounded in battle, "between the two shoulders, his thick military coat preventing a more serious injury by a piece of shrapnel. One of his sons was also injured, and they have been in Manchester Hospital, and has now practically recovered. He will proceed again to the front in due course."
