According to William Edward Sheldon's 1931 Death Certificate, an inquest was held into his accidental death on 7 Sept. 1931. Source: GRO.gov.uk; William E. Sheldon; Deaths Sep 1931; Age: 64; District: Cannock; Vol.: 6b; Page: 442
"A verdict of Accidental Death was returned at an inquest held at Hednesford, on Monday, by Mr. W.W. Morgan (Coroner), on William Edward Sheldon (64), Watling Street, Bridgtown, who was killed by being knocked down by a motor van at the Hawkes Green cross-roads, East Cannock. The driver of the van, Jas. Edward Davis, grocer and newsagent, Bageley Road, Hazel Slade, was exonerated from blame. Evidence was given that Sheldon, in company with another man, was walking over the crossing towards the East Cannock colliery, where he was employed. They heard the sound of the horn but did not see the headlights of the van. They had gone only a few yards over the crossing when the van hit Sheldon from behind, inflicting terrible injuries. The man who was with Sheldon said they stepped off the footpath on their right-hand side of the road, but Davis said his impression was they came off the left hand footpath. He tried to pass the man on the right side, when Sheldon suddenly made a right incline and was struck by the mudguard. Mr. Burrell Davis represented the driver.
