About Alfred Zion Ottaway
Born in Hunterville and educated at Taihape. When he left school he took a job on construction of the railway line until the railway from the south met the railway from the north at a little place called Erua. From there he went to Gisborne when he met Barbara Ellen Mathews. Married in Gisborne at the Anglican Church in Derby Street.
After marriage they moved to Te Karaka where employed in a small mill. As the railway from Gisborne was being built further into the country towards Motuhora, thie rnext move was to Matawai where he worked for Drummond Brothers.
Eventually the railway arrived at Motuhora and the company named T. Quirk built two saw mills to cut this large block of bush. Alfred was owed a fair amount of money by this company he was working fo, so decided to cut their losses and go to Motuhora. He spent 16 years at Quirk's Mill.
All the bush was cut by 1929 and in April 1930 moved to Gisborne and lived in a new house they had built on the section at 5 Oates Street, Te Hapara.
Alfred had stayed behind at Motuhora to give Quirk a hand to shift the mill to Te Were in the back of Matawai. Joined the family in Gisborne in September 1930. Went to work at the freeezing works. Had to walk 5km to work and took a bus home. After a couple of months of this he bought a BSA bicycle.
