1st Sri Lankan Malay, Muslim to be Promoted to Superintendent of Police Grade - 1 (1935 to 1972). Fondly remembered as “Batoon” to his siblings and Batoon Uncle, Batoon Kake to his nephews and nieces and his ever-loving grandchildren. B R Dole was born on the 10th June 1913 in Colombo to parents of Mr & Mrs B.H Dole Childhood. He was educated at Wesley College Colombo and was attracted to the uniform from a very young age. During his school career, he played Soccer and was a member of the college Boxing team that represented the Stubbs Shield boxing championships. His father, Baba H Dole was an Inspector of Police during the British Rule of Ceylon. Marriage - B R Dole married Ms.Nona Injan Cassim on the 20th April 1945, from “Pahala Walauwa” Barrack Street, Hambantota, who is the daughter of Interpreter Mudliar Tuan Hareera Cassim & Mass Sundari Kitchil. She is a descendant of Prince Raden Singha Noori who was exiled with his wife Putri Chandra Devi from Kampong Baru, Batavia, Java Indonesia in 1790 to Ceylon by the Dutch. The couple was blessed with six children. Gnei Mudrika, Gnei Nilanjali, Baba Hashim, Gnei Lilamani, Gnei Romani, Baba Rohan Joining the Police Department - B R Dole was selected to the Police as a young Sub Inspector on 1st May 1935 during the tenure of Sir Herbert Layard Dowbiggin - Inspector General of Police in Ceylon (1913 – 1937) Police career & Station, areas served; 1. Joined as a Sup Inspector 1st May 1935 China Bay, Trincomalee, Awissawella 2. Promoted to Inspector 1st May 1945 Padukka, Habaraduwa, Ehaliyagoda, Baddegama 3. Promoted to Head Quarter Inspector 1st January 1954 Tangalle, Galle 4. Promoted to Assistant Superintendent 1st May 1955 Awissawella Division, Kelaniya, Colombo Central, Nugegoda Division 5. Promoted to Superintendent 1st May 1965 Superintendent – Southern Province Head Quarters – Galle 6. Superintendent Grade 1 on 1st May 1970 – Police Headquarter Colombo, as the head of Crimes Division 7. Retired as the most Senior of the Grade – 1 Superintendents in November 1972 On his retirement in November 1972, he was the most top rank serving Malay officer at the Department. His next promotion was Deputy Inspector General of Police, but retired due to a heart attack a year prior to his service completion at the department. There were only 3 Deputy Inspector General of Police at the time of his retirement SP - B R Dole becomes the 1st Malay, Muslim to be promoted to the rank of Superintendent in 1965 in the history of the Police Department. The people of Galle, Southern Province and all the stations he served loved him to the core for his commitment to Public Service. His leadership and Legacy paved the way for the next generation of Malays to reach the highest positions in the Police Department. Career Highlights - 1939 – 1945 World War II - He Served in the Second World War as sub inspector of police China bay (his first station); When the Japanese were bombing Trincomalee at that time. 1952 – Enrolment of the 1st batch of Women to the Police Department SP – Dole was a member of the recruitment board that selected the 1st batch of Women Constables to the Police Department. The 1st Malay Women Police Constable Ms.Laila Packeer – WPC 002 was one of the recruits 1965 General Elections (Pre & Post) Election violence that took place in the Southern Province and many were arrested and jailed. The famous and powerful politician from Galle had called SP Dole and requested him to release his supporters which the request was denied. Subsequent conversation “Dole, if you do not release my MEN, I will inform the IGP to transfer you immediately” “Not the IGP, even you inform the Queen of England, I will not release them” SP – Dole was not afraid to uphold law and order of the country which was a hallmark of the men in uniform and the establishment at that time. Dr.Kularathna – Wife murder case Galle Fort - 1967 Murder Investigations that he solved while he was serving as SP – Galle Setting up of the Crime Detective Bureau – 1st August 1972 SP -Dole was instrumental in setting of this new Branch in the Police Department prior to his retirement the same year. Behind every successful man is a great woman. Mrs.Injan Dole Cassim was a graceful lady who always looked in to the well being of her husband and children. SP Dole loved the company of his wife and attributes his success to her unwavering support during his ever stressful and challenging career.
