”There is general agreement amongst researchers that John Watson (A) married Alice and that they had at least four children: John (B); Joseph; Benjamin; and Sarah, wife of Michael Johnson. This much is poven by the 1702 will of John Watson (A), which is filed in Henrico County, VA. The maiden name of Alice, wife of John Watson (A), is not proven. Her marriage to John Watson (A) appears to have been a second marriage, and she was probably first married to Henry Rowen (or Rowing). Anne Rowing, orphan of Henry Rowing, was called a ward of John Watson (A) in 1677. A subsequent record shows that John Watson (A) released his guardianship of Mary Rowen to John Jones in 1686, and it is possible that Anne Rowing and Mary Rowen were the same person.”

Alice ? was born BEF 1652, and died AFT 1715 in Henrico County, VA.

Notes

Alice Rowen, Birth 1633 VA, Henrico Co Death aft 1715 VA, Henrico Co

Alice (born 1633), was the widow of Henry Rowan, by whom she had a son Francis Rowen [born 1667] and a daughter Mary Rowen, who married John Jones by 1686. Ancient John Watson released his guardianship of Mary to John Jones that year, so that means she was not yet 21.)

On 1 Nov. 1709 Alice Watson agreed to give most of her possessions to her son Joseph if he would care for her for the rest of her life: Indian boy Peter, who had apparently not reached his 36th birthday, a mulatto boy Will Gathings, 4 feather beds, 12 ewes, one ram, 8 cows, 3 heifers, 1 steer, 3 unbroken horses (one black and two gray) branded "JW" and £30. Thomas, in turn, promised to provide his mother with meat, drink, washing, lodging, and clothes. They made their marks on the deed and bond required to document the agreement that Francis Rowen, a son by her 1st marriage, and Thomas Cocke witnessed. [Henrico Co. Deeds & Wills 1706-09, pp. 190, 191]
On 7 Jan. 1711/2 Alice gave her sons John and Benjamin Indian girls Jenny and Betty and other goods in consideration of "goodwill and affection"¦ and £10." [Henrico Co. Deeds & Wills 1710-14, p. 107] When her son Benjamin made his will in 1715, Alice, now about 82 years of age, was still living.
