Re: John Garner m. Alyce Alice Eaton By Charles Andrews June 29, 2004 at 03:01:00 In reply to: Re: John Garner m. Alyce Alice Eaton Richard Brunt 6/29/04 There is almost nothing in Dr. Garner's book on the Eatons.Dr. Garner quotes William Archer Garner (who conducted some Garner research in the 1920s-1950s) with whom he disagreed on the ancestry of John Garner: ". . . John Garner Sr., son of Jonathan [sic] Garner. He located on the waters of Dutchman Creek, Rowan County, many years before the Revolution. He married Alice Eaton, daughter of Peter Eaton, and reared a family of nine children, six sons and three daughters.Their names were: John, Jacob, William, Benjamin, Burgess, Henry E., Anna, Lydia, and Elnora. His home was about one mile from where Cross Roads Baptist Church now stands. In the year 1798 the State granted him a tract of land containing 260 acres, being at that time in Surry County {on the Rowan County line}[Dr. Garner comment].Years later, his children grown, some married, others gone to the far West, his wife having died, he remarried in 1818 to a widow Margaret Sigle. . . ."
Later on, Dr. Garner reported that Leroy Garner had a Margaret Eaton as the wife of Benjamin Garner, while William Archer Garner had Benjamin's wife as Polly Baity.Benjamin was a son of John and Alice Eaton Garner. The relationship of Margaret Eaton to Alice Eaton was unknown.Dr. Garner also noted that Leroy Garner stated that Margaret Eaton Garner was his ancestor.
That is all on Eatons.
You may want to try to contact Leroy Garner, 520 Idledale, Pueblo West, CO 81007.I do not know if that address is still valid.
