About Alice Catherine (Corwin) Trotter

In Loving Memory of Great Pioneer Woman Alice Catherine (Corwin) Trotter April 29, 1867- March 24, 1947

Alice Trotter was born Welland, Niagara Regional Municipality, Ontario, Canada on April 29, 1867, to Benjamin and Mercy Corwin. She was second oldest of four. The Corwin’s immigrated from Canada to Pembina County, North Dakota Territory in 1874 when she was 6. Eventually settling in Beaulieu, Cavalier Co., North Dakota Territory.

Alice met and married Thomas E Trotter in 1887, settling in Neche, North Dakota Alice and Thomas were blessed with five beautiful children with their oldest Grandpa Erwin C Trotter and his twin Vera. Vera got sick on a family trip and went home to see the Lord at age 3. About that time Alice then gave birth to Carrie and Lisle.

Thomas E Trotter and his brother John owned were merchants and owned several general merchandise stores in the North Dakota Territory/State One in Neche, another in North Dakota in Osnabrock, ND with two at least two others. general stores were set up like little minny malls carrying everything from food to sewing needs to farm supplies. Two of the stores were hit by a fire. The one in Osnabrock, ND “J. Trotter General Merchandise” was totalled when the town got hit by a tornado which blow throw the town in July of 1899. As the result of that in 1900, Grandpa Thomas and Grandma Alice and Uncle John Trotter moved their families west. They settled in Centralia, Washington Where Grandpa and Uncle John got to work open new general merchandise stores. During this time Grandma gave birth to Willard in 1903. But he would in live past the age of two. The rest of their children grew and lived to old age. She and Grandpa were blessed with five Grandchildren one being my mother. There move westward proved to be a set up by the Lord for the meeting of Grandma Mildred (Mersdorf) to meet their son Erwin. Thomas ended up working for a time for Henry F Mersdorf Grandma’s father. During that time the two met and soon after Erwin returned from France after WWI was over they married.

Alice was an avid pianist even though her hands were so small it couldn't reach an octave.

After she and Grandpa retired they settled in Glendale, California where she died in 1947. You never know when the Lord has His hands in your life until you look back and will see it. If you don’t take time to work on your family tree you will never know how blessed you really are.
