Alice Scott was issued a Teacher's Second Class certificate on July 27, 1878, for a period of 15 months. The certificate is signed by A. Vanassdal in Johnson County, MO, who was county commissioner. This means that she passed an examination that showed that she had gone above and beyond what was needed to teach country school.
She was examined in 16 subjects including mental and written arithmetic, English grammar, U.S. history, algebra, geography, government, reading and penmanship. On a scale of 10 (perfect), she scored 8 1/2 in six subjects and 9 in the remaining six subjects.
She was born in Johnson County, MO and had always lived in the neighborhood (Post Oak Township) where she died. She had been ill for seven years, was an invalid, although heart failure was the immediate cause of her death. She belonged to the Harmony Baptist Church. Services were held at the Mt. Zion Church with burial in the Mt. Zion cemetery.
She married William A. Stephens on February 19, 1879. She had five children: Rebecca Rex (Rexie), Walter, William, Mabel and Mary Ivy (or Iva) who died at seven years of age.
Her parents, Daniel and Rebecca Scott, came from Tennessee and were among the first settlers of Johnson County.
