Pages 127-128:

In 1879, shortly after returning to New York City from his studies in Munich, Chase was introduced to Julius Gerson (b. 1824) and his family: three daughters, Minnie (1853-1927), Virginia (1864-1951), and Alice (1866-1927), and one son, Julius, Jr. (b. 1855). Mr. Gerson was a patron of young artists returning from abroad, many of whom gathered at his home to discuss art and sketch. His daughters, particularly Virginia and Alice, often served as models - first informally and then for major studio pictures. Virginia, fondly known as Jennie, is the model in the "Portrait of Miss G." She also appears in Chase's well-known paintings of 1880, "The Tenth Street Studio", as well as in several other important works done by Chase in the 1880s and 1890s. In this painting, Virginia wears a high-collared white dress with ruffles at the yoke, leg-o-mutton sleeves, and a tightly-sashed waist. She is seated against a vibrantly painted green background.

Virginia Gerson, who would become Chase's sister-in-law, was also active in literary and theatrical circles; she was a close friend of the dramatist Clyde Fitch (of whom Chase also completed a portrait) and wrote several children's books that were published, including "The Happy Heart Family (New York: Fox Duffield and Co., 1898). These books, which include charming illustrations by her as well, were dedicated to Chase's children, and were most likely loosely based on the life of the Chase family.
