About Alice Pew
Biography
Alice Parsons was born at Gloucester, Massachusetts Bay, in September of 1774, a daughter of Jonathan Parsons, Jr., and Sarah (Winnery) Parsons.[1] There is a record of the publishment of her intentions to marry Andrew Stanwood, Jr. (christened, as a son of Andrew, Sr., on 14 June 1767; his actual birth was not recorded at Gloucester)[2] on 10 December 1796, but for unspecified reasons, the banns were "forbidden" by her[3] and it seems an open question whether the union was solemnized or consummated: Andrew is likely the Andrew Stanwood who married Mary Smith at Salem three years later.[4] Alice unquestionably did marry, as his first of three wives, William Pew, Jun., at Gloucester, their intentions published at the close of June, 1798; the couple had at least five recorded children (see Research Notes below).
Alice died at Gloucester in January of 1814. William survived her by more than three decades, dying -- after two additional marriages, with a second widowhood between -- at Gloucester in 1848.
Research Notes
The birth of just one Alice Parsons is recorded at Gloucester in the appropriate time period, and her maiden name is clearly shown in the published marriage intentions of Alice Parsons to William Pew in 1798; another marriage, however, is also indicated for a bride by her name in 1796, to Andrew Stanwood (see above) -- intentions recorded in December of 1796, with the unusual notation, "(Banns forbidden by Alice Parsons.)" Was the marriage never solemnized? -- if so, it was evidently not recorded, and no Gloucester record exists of any children by this union.
There is a slight possibility that Andrew Stanwood was kin to Alice and that this may have impeded the marriage; research is needed to investigate that possibility.
Again, only intentions are recorded for her marriage to William Pew a year and a half later, but in this case there is no question of the union, which produced recorded offspring; and the marginal notation of Alice's death, in the handwritten Gloucester record for William Pew's family (the body of the text focused on his second spouse, Lois, and their children -- without mention of Alice's children) does show her as "Alice Pew". There appears however to be no extant entry for William's family by Alice, which included daughters Alice (b. 1803) and Abigail (b. 1811), and sons William (b. 1801 or 1802), John (b. 1807), and Addison (b. 1813). There is also a son Henry (b. 1805 or 1806), though Alice's maiden surname seems oddly misidentified in one of Henry's birth records as "Mason" rather than "Parsons".[5]
