Mathew Smith Jr. was born in England about 1631, Son of Matthew Sr. and Jane Smith. He came to New England with his parents and siblings in 1637. The family settled in Charlestown, Middlesex, Massachusetts, where Matthew was awarded administration of his father's estate in 1681. The name of his first wife is not known, but he was living in Woburn, Middlesex, when his first child, Elizabeth, was born in 1658. They had a son, Matthew in 1659 and two more children. His wife evidently died about 1664, shortly after the birth of their daughter, Hannah.

He then married Alice Leader on July 14, 1665, in Charlestown. When his father died in 1681, Matthew became known as Matthew Sr. and his son Matthew was designated Jr.

Mathew's wife Alice died before 1684, and Matthew Smith, now Sr., married Mary Brown Cutler, widow of John Cutler and mother of his daughter-in-law, at Reading, Middlesex, on June 20, 1684. John Cutler had died in 1683. Mathew Smith Jr. had married Mary Cutler, daughter of John and Mary, at Charlestown on March 2, 1682. Matthew Sr. was a resident of Charlestown as late as 1694, when he bought some land.
