About Alice or Joanna Gooch

  • Tuthill family of Tharston, Norfolk County, England and Southold, Suffolk County, New York; also written Totyl, Totehill, Tothill, Tuttle, etc (1898)
  • These arms, without the crest, are found in the church of Trowse-with-Newton, Norfolkshire, England, on the tomb of Elizabeth, wife of Sir Roger Dalyson, daughter of William Tuthill, of Newton, Gent., and granddaughter of John Tuthill, of Saxlingham. She died 27 Sept., 1585, in her 19th year.
  • John Tuthill, of Saxlingham, father of HENRY, b. in 1580, was perhaps brother of William Tuthill, named above.
  • I. HENRY TUTHILL, of Tharston, Norfolk Co., England, b. in 1580, 3rd son of John Tuthill, of Saxlingham, m. ALICE (GOOCH?). His will, dated 20 Mar, 1618, proved 20 April, 1619, in England, mentions John Gooch, father: Margaret Rau, mother-in-law; Ann Woodyard, kinswoman; John Tuthill, brother; wife Alice, and the five children below. The Church Register of St. Mary's Tharston, contains the entry of Henry's burial on 26 Mar, 1618. It also records the baptism of all his children. Issue:
  • i. John, of Tharston, sometime of Southold, in the Colony of New Haven, America, bapt. 25 Oct., 1607, d. in England. "He was a widower in 1637." Both Trumbull's History of Connecticut, and Dodd's Register, mention this elder, or Pilgrim, John Tuthill, as at New Haven in 1640. He was one of the original or earliest settlers of Southold and her first civil magistrate, being appointed "Constable, by the New Haven Court, in 1642 : 6 : 2, for Yennicok," or Southold.
  • "He had no home lot there, and was probably only a temporary sojourner." Savage and Griffin err in calling him the father of John, Jr., b. 1635. as this latter himself states that he was the son of John's brother, Henry.
  • "Pilgrim John was probably identical with John Tuthill, named with Capt. Underhill in 1638-9 at Piscatawa, now Dover, N. H." He returned to England, remarried and left descendants there.
  • (For other John Tuthills, see Savage's Genealogical Dictionary, The Burnam Family, the Tuttle Family and the Descendants of John Porter.)
  • ii. William, of Tharston, England, bapt. 29 Oct. 1609. Could he have been the William Tuthill, aged 26 who came to America in the ship Planter, in 1635, and who settled in New Haven, Conn., in 1639/40? Hatfield's History of Elizabeth, N. J., and Long Island tradition, say that he was; but the descendants of William, of New Haven, believe that their ancestor, the said William, was almost certainly of Devonshire.
  • iii. Henry, bapt. 28 Jun, 1612.
  • iv. Alice, bap. 24 Sept., 1614.
  • v. Elizabeth, bapt. 9 March, 1616. __________________

  • The surname Tuthill is spelled also Totyl, Totehill, and Tuttle, and is derived from tot-hill, a mound. Blomefield, the historian of Norfolk, has written of several tumuli near Thetford, Norfolk, England, the largest of which is called tut-hill. These were doubtless raised by the Danes to cover their dead after the battle with King Edmund, A. D. 871. The arms of the Norfolk family are : Or. on a chevron azure, three crescents argent. Crest : A leopard passant, sable, crowned or, on a mound vert. The arms are on the tomb of Elizabeth, wife of Sir Roger Dalyson, and daughter of William Tuthill, in Trowse-with- Newton, Norfolkshire. England ; she died September 27, 1585. aged eighteen. She was granddaughter of John Tuthill, of Saxlingham, father of Henry, mentioned below.
  • (I) Henry, son of John Tuthill, was born in 1580. He lived in Tharston, county Norfolk, England. He married Alice Gooch. His will, dated March 20, 1618, proved April 20, 1619, in England, mentions his father, John Gooch, Margaret Rau, mother-in-law, Ann Woodyard, a relative, John, a brother, wife Alice, and children. He was buried March 26, 1618. Children, baptismal dates: John, October 25, 1607; William, October 29, 1609; Henry, mentioned below; Alice, September 24, 1614; Elizabeth, March 9, 1616.
  • (II) Henry (2), son of Henry (1) Tuthill, was baptized June 28, 1612, in Tharston, England. He married, in England, Bridget ___ , who came with him to America, and married (second) William Wells, Gentleman, of Southold, New York. Henry Tuthill settled in Hingham, Massachusetts. He had a planting lot at Broad Cove in 1635. and a house lot in 1637. Cushing says that he came from Norfolkshire to New Hingham in 1637. He was made freeman in March, 1638, and was constable in 1640. June 20, 1638, he sold his lot in Hingham and moved doubtless to Southold. He died before 1650, and his wife also died before 1650. Children: John, mentioned below; Elizabeth; Nathaniel; Daniel (probably) baptized in Hingham, Massachusetts, August 30, 1640.
  • (III) John, son of Henry (2) Tuthill, was born July 16, 1635, and died at Southold, New York, October 12, 1717. He married there (first), Febuary 17, 1657. Deliverance, daughter of William and Dorothy (Hayne?) Kinge ; she was baptized at Salem, Massachusetts, August 31, 1641, and died at Southold, January 25, 1688-89, aged forty-nine years. He married (second), May 28, 1690, Sarah, probably widow of Thomas Young, and daughter of John Frost ; she died November 8, 1727. He owned much land at Southold. • "HENRY TUTHILL, son of Henry and Alice (Gooch) Tuthill was baptized in St. Mary's church, Tharston, Eng., June 28, 1612, married Bridget..., and emigrated to New England, settling first at Hingham, MA, where he had a planting lot at Broad Cove in 1635 and a house lot in 1637. He was freeman in March 1638 and Constable in 1640. He sold his property in Hingham, June 20, 1644 and removed to Southold, L. I. He and his wife both died before 1650; She as the wife of William Wells of Southold." Frost, Josephine C. "Yates-Terry Genealogy", Film #1020788, pg. 79. (cont. from source: J. Tuttle Families...)
  • According to C. E. Banks book "Planters of the Commonwealth," Henry Tuthill and his wife Bridget of Saxingham Co. Norfolk, sailed from Ipswich on the Mary Anne of Yarmouth. William Goose was master of the ship which arrived at Boston on 20 June 1637. He first settled and purchased a lot In Highman, Massachusetts, sold it in June, 1644, and moved to Southold, Long Island, New York, where his brother John had been for some years.
  • Acccording to Alva Tuttle in "Tuttle-Tuthill Lines of America," After Henry's death his wife, Bridget, also died soon after her marriage to William Wells.
  • A well researched summary of "The Tuthill Family of Tharston, Norfolk, Co., England and Southold, Suffolk Co., New York" appears in the 1987 Volume 2 of Geneologies of Long Island Families, by Henry B. Hoff, Baltimore Genealogical Publishing Co., covering through to Azariah Tuthill born in 1724.
  • THE ORIGINAL CREATOR OF THIS MEMORIAL PLACED HENRY TUTHILL IN THIS CEMETERY BASED UPON THE HISTORICAL DOCUMENTS AT HIS DISPOSAL. I WISH I COULD DISCOVER WHICH DOCUMENTS HE USED AS IT WOULD CAUSE ME A LOT LESS GRIEF WITH THIS MEMORIAL. HIS INTEREST WAS IN OLD BURIAL STONES FROM THE 17TH & 18TH CENTURIES IN AMERICA. FROM WHAT I CAN DETERMINE HE WAS CAREFUL IN HIS RESEARCH AND NEVER MADE UP INFORMATION WILLY NILLY, UNLIKE SOME OF THE EDITS I RECEIVE.
  • I HAVE RECEIVED EDITS FROM PEOPLE WANTING ME TO CHANGE THIS HENRY INTO VARIOUS OTHER HENRY TUTHILLS. SOME WANT HIM MARRIED TO WOMEN OF DIFFENT NAMES; AND STILL OTHERS ADAMANTLY DENY HE IS BURIED IN THE OLD BURYING GROUND OF THE 1ST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH OF SOUTHOLD. I HAVE INVESTIGATED ALL OF THE EDIT REQUESTS AND THE MAJORITY OF THEM ARE BASED UPON SLOPPY RESEARCH DRAWN FROM EITHER FAULTY FAMILY TREES OR A CONFUSION OF THE VARIOUS HENRY TUTHILLS WHO LIVED ON LONG ISLAND DURING DIFFERENT TIME PERIODS.
  • AS TO WHERE THIS HENRY IS BURIED, I HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO DETERMINE FOR MYSELF, BUT SINCE I HAVE FAITH IN THE ORIGINAL CREATOR OF THIS MEMORIAL, NOTHING WILL BE CHANGED UNLESS SOMEONE CAN PROVIDE ME WITH VERIFIABLE PROOF THAT I CAN CHECK OUT FOR MYSELF. JUST BECAUSE YOU SAY SO IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH. YOU MUST FULLY DOCUMENT.

  • She also has locks of hair, knitted doilies, pieces of wedding cake in small boxes (seems thats what was done in that time, they were given as gifts) and many other cool items.
  • Its great to actually touch your ancestors handwritting. Anyway...
  • There was a Henry Tuthill, born 28 June 1612 in Tharston, Norfolk county, England. He married a Bridget.
