Alistair (52), originally from Laurencekirk, near Aberdeen, was in his vehicle in the Johannesburg suburb of Benoni on Saturday night when a gang of black youths shot him in the head as he waited at a junction.
Police reports said the hijackers dragged his body from the Ford Sapphire pick-up and left him on the road before speeding off in the vehicle. It is understood Mr Hector died instantly.
His mother, Mrs Catherine Hector, was told the news on Sunday morning by her other son, Colin, who runs a garage in Stonehaven. Mrs Hector (79), said yesterday: I went absolutely berserk. I just couldn't believe it. This has devastated us all.
She said her son's Scottish wife, Margaret (47), had wondered why he was late arriving home when the police came to the house: They found him on the road and he must have had some sort of identification on him because they went to the house right away.
Mrs Hector added that her son, a self-employed engineer, had loved living in the country for the last 14 years, but his wife had become terrified about safety, especially for their sons, Kevin (9,) and eight-year-old Marc.
