About Allan Fink

Allan M. Fink Financial services executive with expertise in options and derivatives, faculty member and adviser to U.S. oversight agency, patron of the arts and a 'really great guy,' 77 Allan M. Fink, 77, of Warren, N.J., and New York City, formerly of Westfield, N.J., passed away at home on Monday, Sept. 5, 2016, surrounded by his loving family. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. today, Sept. 7, 2016, at the Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel, 68 Old Short Hills Rd., Livingston, N.J. Burial will follow in B'nai Abraham Memorial Park in Union, N.J. Allan was born on Nov. 6, 1938, and grew up in Forest Hills and Great Neck, N.Y. He was a high school graduate of Dwight Academy and graduated from Rider University, where he earned a B.S. in finance and accounting. Allan served in the military from 1962 to 1964, where he taught radiological and biological warfare. Subsequently, in 1968, he earned his M.B.A. from Fairleigh Dickinson University, where he later taught as an adjunct professor. Additionally, he taught finance at Wagner College and the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. After graduating, Allan spent nine years at Dun & Bradstreet before entering the financial services industry, where he spent 33 years as a financial executive beginning at Merrill Lynch. He developed a knowledge and expertise in derivatives, options, and commodities and was recruited by Bache & Co. While there, he traveled across the country training investment professionals about options-trading strategies and derivatives markets. He was then hired by Advest, Inc. to manage their options portfolio and continued to mentor and teach these strategies to account executives. Allan later managed the New York Advest offices and went on to become a regional manager, and then division manager. He retired in 2006, after the company was ultimately acquired by Merrill Lynch. While in retirement he provided his expertise as an arbitrator for FINRA. Allan was a man of great passion and enthusiasm whose leisure time was spent with his family and friends. His interests were diverse. He was an avid New York sports fan of intense loyalty. He was a 30-year N.Y. Giants season ticket holder and closely followed the Rangers, Knicks and Mets. He made a point to not miss an athletic event in which his children and grandchildren participated. A patron of the arts, Allan spent time in New York City experiencing the stimulating culture that the city had to offer. He loved the theatre, jazz, art galleries and ballet. As a collector of contemporary art, he truly appreciated many genres, artists and diverse art forms. A prolific reader, he shared each book that he enjoyed with his friends and family. He was a world traveler who appreciated the finest experiences, food and wines. Always up to a challenge, in 2005, Allan became commodore of the Garden State Yacht Club, Lake Hopatcong - the first commodore who never owned a boat. Allan is survived by his devoted wife of 54 years, Eileen (Simon); and his loving children, Pamela Friedman (Robert) of Warren, N.J.; Carolyn Reisman (Dr. Jeffrey) of Short Hills, N.J.; and Helene Coustan (the late Brad) of Westfield; and his seven grandchildren, Amanda and Ilyse Reisman, Isabelle, Sanford and Charlotte Friedman and Victor and Ava Coustan. Allan is survived by his brother-in-law, Leslie Simon; his brothers, Dr. Sam Mandel (Annette) of Manhattan and Miami, and Dr. Edward Mandel (Ellen) of Overland Park, Kan. He was predeceased by his parents, Anna and Herman Fink; his sister, Cielle Block, and most recently, by his son-in-law, Brad Coustan. Friends and family will miss his friendship, loyalty, kindness, and sensitivity. They will also miss his competitive spirit, sense of humor, moral compass, family values, and unbounded enthusiasm for exploring all that life has to offer.
