About Allen Shrewsbury

Allen Shrewsbury was born about 1764 in Hanover, Virginia Colony, British America3, died March 05, 1843 in Washington, Kentucky, USA.

Allen enlisted as a private in the Army of the Revolution in August of 1780. He resided in Bedford Co., VA at the time of his enlistment. He marched from New London, Bedford Co., VA down the south side of the James River to its mouth and there remained in the service of the United States until the end of February or the first of March 1781, when he returned through Petersburg to New London where he was discharged. He entered under the following named officers: General Mulenburg, Colonel Merriweather, Major De Clarion (a Frenchman or reputed as such), Captain John Trigg, and Lieutenant John Davis.

Allen and his wife moved to Kentucky from Virginia in 1799 or1800 where they remained.

The Will of Allen Shrewsbury was probated June 26, 1843.

In the name of God, Amen. l Allen Shrewsbury of the County of Washington, being weak in body but of sound mind and disposing memory and calling to mind the uncertainty of human life and being desirous to dispose of all such worldly estate as it hath pleased God to bless me with. I give and bequeath the same in the manner following. That is today I give ie: First I desire that all the perishable part of my estate be immediately sold after my decease and out of the moneys arising therefrom all my just debts and funeral expenses be paid if there is debts sufficient to take all of my perishable property and should the perishable part of my property prove insufficient for the above purposes then I desire that my executor, hereafter named, May sell so much of my negroes as will be of value sufficient to satisfy and pay the above. And out of the money arising therefrom pay and satisfy such of my just debts as shall remain unpaid out of the perishable part of my estate.

Secondly, After the payment of my debts and funeral expenses I give my wife Nancy Shrewsbury my negro woman Lucy for her use and benefit during her natural lifetime and after her death for her to be sold and the money equally divided among my children herein after mentioned and to be enjoyed by them forever.

Thirdly, I give to my son Nathaniel Shrewsbury one negro boy named Peter now about six years old at the price of three hundred dollars to him and to his heirs forever.

Fourthly- I give to my daughter Mary Shrewsbury one negro girl named Fanny now about twelve years old at the price of three hundred dollars to her and her children forever.

Fifthly- I give to my daughter Sarah Donoho one negro boy named Bonepart now about five years of age at the price of two hundred and seventy-five dollars to be enjoyed by her and her children forever.

Sixthly- I give to my daughter Nelly Fleming (?) one negro girl named Elizabeth now about nine years old at the price of three hundred dollars to be enjoyed by her and her children forever.

Seventhly, all the rest of my estate both real and personal of what nature or (?) it may be not herein before particularly disposed of I desire to be sold and so divided as that my son Benjamin Shrewsbury is to have his equal portion with my children before named and my daughter Nancy youngest to have her equal part with the children before named to be enjoyed by her and her children forever. And unto my son Drury Shrewsbury's children I wish them to have their father's part and that he to be made equal with my other children and to be enjoyed by them forever, and that the balance of my estate over and above making these last named children equal to my first, I wish the proceeds to be equally divided among all of my children forever as before named and that Sarah Donoho have twenty-five dollars to makeup the price in her negro. He married Nancy Wheeler March 16, 1790 in Madison, Kentucky, USA. She was born about 1769, died February 24, 1846 in Mercer, Kentucky, USA. She was the daughter of Benjamin Wheeler and Hannah Bills. Their children: i. Nathaniel Shrewsbury was born about 1790. ii. Mary Shrewsbury was born about 1792. iii. Sarah Shrewsbury was born about 1794. iv. Nelly Shrewsbury was born about 1796. 5
