Allen Freeman Smithson was a native of Mississippi, a planter and aslave owner before the war. He was a convert to the Morman faith and,disposing of his property with the intention of settling in Salt LakeCity, left Parkerville on the first day of March in 1846. Thefollowing year found them in Pueblo, Colorado, where they becameacquainted with John Brown, Sr., James Waters, V. J. Herring and aportion of the party under Jefferson Hunt, who came into SanBernardino county June 24, 1851 . Mrs. Smithson having died, thefamily at that time consisted of Mr . Allen F. Smithson, the father;[and his children] John Bartley; Catherine, who had married JackCrouch in Utah; James D.; Mary E., who became Mrs. Robert Smith; andLehigh. Upon their arrival in San Bernardino they located on a piece ofunsurveyed land near the present [1904] cemetery, and after the surveysettled on land now at the corner of A and Seventh streets, in thecity of San Bernardino. The family lived there until 1857, when theyre turned to Utah and located at Beaver, in the south part of theterritory . Mr. Smithson afterwards received an appointment as U. S.Postmaster at Pareah [also spelled Pahreah and Paria], Kane Co., Utah,where he lived the remainder of his life. Obituary of Allen Freeman Smithson:
At Pahreah Kane County, September 27th, 1877, at 2 o'cock a.m., of typhoid fever, ALLEN FREEMAN SMITHSON, son of Bartley and Sarah Smithson, aged 61 years, 7 months and 16 days. Deceased was born February 11th, 1816, at Pendleton County, South Carolina, and was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints December 7th, 1843, by Elder Benjamin Clapp, in Marion County, Alabama. He emigrated with the Saints to Utah, and arrived in Salt Lake City July 29th, 1847. In 1851 he went to California, remained there until the fall of 1857, and returned to Utah and settled at Beaver, Beaver County, and from there volunteered to go and build of the south. Arrived in Washington County in 1859, and endured the hardships of Dixie faithfully until 1872, when he was called by Prest. F. Snow to Pahreah, where he acted as Bishop of the Pahreah Ward until his death, and as President of the United Order, which was organized in 1874, and was a faithful worker therin until his death. He was a kind husband and father and was beloved by all who knew him. He was the father of nineteen children. He leaves a large family and many friends to mourn his loss. He was an honest, upright and an industrious man, and died a faithful Latter-day Saint, and in hopes of a glorious resurrection.
