Ambrose Gruenke was a sculptor and wood carver. He began in early childhood making toys for neighborhood children. He sculpted President Franklin Roosevelt in Grand Coulee, Washington, as well as rough wooden carvings in northern California, a 120-foot totem pole, a covered wagon with oxen, a carving called "The Chief" in Laytonville, CA and "The End of the Trail" carving which sits at the entry of the Trees of Mystery in Klamath, CA. He was found to have a brain tumor while in the Army in 1941.
