WILLIAM DE CANTELOWE (or DE CANTELU), of Chilton Cantelo, Somerset. He married ___. They had two sons, Walter and Fulk, Knt. In 1155 King Henry II confirmed the gift of William de Cantelowe to Longueville Priory.

WALTER DE CANTELOWE, of Brimpton, Berkshire, Adber and Leigh, Dorset, Fontley and Oakley, Hampshire, and Barwick, Camel, and Chilton Cantelo, Somerset. He held two knights' fees of William de Roumare in 1166. He also held lands of William de Roumare in Normandy.

He married AMICE ___. They had three sons, William, Knt., Robert Barat (or Cantelowe), and Roger Orget, and three daughters, Nichole, Sibyl, and probably Isabel.

His name occurs on a role of the Norman Exchequer dated 1184. He was a member of the entourage of John, Count of Mortain [afterwards King John]. In 1195 William de Saint Mary accounted £4 for the farm at Barwick, Somerset of Walter de Cantelowe for half a year. In 1201 he sued Robert de Cantelowe for the vill of Chilton Cantelo, Somerset as being his right and inheritance, whereof his father, William de Cantelowe, was seised during the reign of King Henry II [1154-89]. In 1201-2 he conveyed all his right in the vill of Chilton Cantelo, Somerset to Robert de Cantelowe; for this concession Robert gave Walter 28 marks of money, and thereupon Walter did homage to Robert in the Court. In 1204-5 the king issued a writ to the Sheriff of Norfolk to deliver to Walter certain lands in that county which the king had previously committed to the custody of William his son. At an unknown date, he granted in pure and perpetual alms for the salvation of his soul and those of his wife, Amice, his son and heir, William de Cantelowe, his other children, and his ancestors to Christchurch Priory 1/2 mark a year from his rent at Leigh, Dorset, viz. 20d. to be paid each quarter by Sampson de Leigh and his heirs. WALTER DE CANTELOWE was living in 1205, when the king gave him a dolium of wine.

He was a member of the royal household before 1209, and was described as William de Cantelowe's brother on a number of occasions. … Child of Robert de Cantelowe (otherwise Robert Barad), by ___:
  • a. EUSTACE DE CANTELOWE (or EUSTACE BARET), of Barby, Northamptonshire, Lubbesthorpe, Leicestershire, Basford, Nottinghamshire, etc., son and heir, minor in 1223. He married KATHERINE DE LISLE, daughter and heiress of Hugh de Lisle, of Barby, Northamptonshire, Lubbesthorpe, Leicestershire, and Thorpe in the Glebe, Nottinghamshire. They had no issue.

• vi. ISABEL DE CANTELOWE (probable daughter).* She married (as his 2nd wife) STEPHEN DEVEREUX, of Lyonshall and Frome Herbert, Herefordshire, Wilby, Norfolk, etc., son and heir of John Devereux, of Lyonshall, Herefordshire. They had one son, William. In 1227 he and his heirs were granted a weekly market and yearly fair at Lyonshall, Herefordshire. STEPHEN DEVEREUX died in 1228. His widow, Isabel, married (2nd) RALPH DE PEMBRIDGE (or PENEBRUG) … That Isabel was the sister of Sir William de Cantelowe (died 1239) seems virtually certain. … For further particulars, see Eyton Antiqs. of Shropshire 6 (1858): 273.)

• 1. WALTER de Cauntelo (-after 3 Oct 1190). The Red Book of the Exchequer names "Radulfus de Kantilupo, i militem, Walterus de Kantilupo, ii milites" as tenants of William de Roumare in Lincolnshire in 1166[1071]. The Feet of Fines records the judgment dated 3 Oct 1190 in a claim by "Benedictum fil Rad de Hengsterwrth" against "Walterum de Kantelu"[1072]. m ---. The name of Walter’s wife is not known. Walter & his wife had three children:
  • a) WILLIAM [II] de Cauntelo (-7 Apr 1239). "William de Cantelupe son of Walter de Cantelupe" donated rent received "annually from Samson his free man of Leg" to Montacute priory by undated charter, witnessed by "William de Cantelupe my son and heir…Gilbert de Sai…"[1073]. … m ---. The name of William’s wife is not known. William [II] & his wife had [four] children: …
  • b) ROGER de Cauntelo . "Willelmus de Cantilupo" paid a fine for "pro Rogero de Cantilupo fratre nostro pro ux q fuit Hug de Hasting" and custody of her "iv filios et I filia…primogenit x ann", dated 1202[1085].
  • c) FULK de Cauntelo (-before Dec 1227). The Testa de Nevill lists knights who held land in Northamptonshire, dated to [1208/10]: "Fulco de Cantilupo" held land "manerium de Burton de domino rege"[1087].
