About Amos Meeker
Rev War Soldier- specifically fought at the Battle of Springfield, June 1780 with his brothers, father and nephews. NJ Militia. (Minuteman). Made Ripley's 'Believe it or Not' as a story titled 'The Fighting Meekers'. Fought along side of Rev. James Caldwell (The Fighting Parson).
Amos was twin to his brother William Meeker [1745-1790]. Amos & wife Joanna Force had 8 children, as shown by 1790 Luzerne Co., Pa. census, where he emigrated, in 1787. They were, in birth order: Jacob [1767], Eunice [1769], Timothy [1771], Aaron [1773], Unk. dau. [1776], Joanna [1779], Esther [1782], & Squire [1787]. Amos is found in the 1817 Chattel Tax records of Delaware Co., Ohio, along with his son Timothy. Amos is then found in the 1820 Fed. Census of Bloom Twp., Fairfield Co., Ohio, living next door to his son Jacob. Amos was then gone, by the 1830 census [presumable deceased, since would be 85 years old], though the Jacob Meeker household was still present. Please note that the internet is full of false & invented information abut Amos, since many people just copy one another & have no idea as to how to do research. The information included here is correct; the result of 40 years of investigations, including, but not limited to visits to his final home in Bloom Township, Fairfield Co., Ohio; an earlier home in Luzerne Co., Pa., & visits to NJ State Archives, Pennsylvania State Archives, Luzerne Co., Pa. archives & Fairfield Co., Ohio archives along with appropriate courthouses. Further, the now lost 1852 John Robertson Burnet Meeker Genealogy was consulted, as it contained details about Amos's family. A copy was found, made decades ago, before the NJHS lost the original or had it stolen. Note further that there was NO Amos Junior, as is claimed on the internet.* Reference: Find A Grave Memorial - SmartCopy: Aug 29 2022, 12:58:32 UTC
