About Amos Callender Spear

Amos and Catherine married June 21, 1842.

Amos moved from Shelburne to Burlington about 1835. He worked first as a shoemaker, like his father. He then worked for and with Dr. John Peck as a druggist. In 1843, he formed his own drug and apothecary business. An advertisement in the Burlington Free Press in 1868 offers "Patent Medicines. Chemicals. Surgical and Dental Instruments, Dentist's Foils, Mineral Teeth, Trusses and Supporters, Shoulder Braces, Bandages, Leeches, Mineral Waters, Druggist's Glass Ware, Brushes, Bird Seeds, Perfumery, Flavoring Extracts, Spices, Shaker Herbs, Dye Stuffs, Inks, Camphene, Burning Fluid and Kerosene Oil", and promises "No article of inferior quality kept."

In 1844, Amos was one of 13 men initiated into Green Mountain Lodge No. 1 (Odd Fellows). He was a trustee of the Burlington Savings Bank 1860 - 1868 (and possibly longer). Amos served as Justice of the Peace in Burlington in 1868, and was also a member of the Boxer Engine Company (fire fighters), Spear Fire Company, and Howard Hose Company.

Amos and Catherine Howard married June 21, 1842. Catherine Howard Spear inherited the winter home of her brother, John Purple Howard, in Florida. After Amos retired, he managed some of the affairs of his late brother-in-laws estate. The couple spent winters at their home in Florida, where Amos passed away. The St.Augustine (Florida) Times-Union noted his passing :The people of St. Augustine will miss the pleasant little gentleman who used to push the wheeled chair containing the invalid wife of nearly half a century."

General William Henry Wirt accompanied Catherine as she brought her husband's remains back to Burlington for burial.

The Spear Family Papers, Special Collections, University of Vermont Library, includes a large number of documents from about 1790 to the 1940s, related to Amos' family.* Reference: [https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/156237543/amos-c_-spear Find A Grave Memorial] - [https://www.geni.com/projects/SmartCopy/18783 SmartCopy]: ''Aug 20 2019, 5:34:50 UTC''
