Amy Halle Bassist

Amy Sternberger Bassist, age 96, was born in Brownsville, Tennessee, where she spent her youth growing up among her cousins there and those that came to visit from June through September. Her deep love of family, and inexhaustible energy is what drove her all the days of her life. Amy moved to Houston and was married to her beloved Harry for thirty two years. Here she raised her family and made many dear and close friends. Amy loved to play poker, mah jong, and canasta. Her strong work ethic was an inspiration to all. She worked at Walter Pye's, Gayle's, and Samuel Hart Gallery.

Amy had a strong love for her community as well. She was a life long member of Congregation Beth Israel, worked as a volunteer at Texas Children's Hospital and at the age of 90-volunteered at the Holocaust Museum until recently.

Amy is preceded in death by her husband Harry Bassist and her sister and brother-in-law Marie and David Bassist. She is survived by her loving children Harry and Lisa Spain Bassist and Philip and Ruth Bassist; beloved nieces and nephews Lynn and Joel Brochstein and Phyllis and Sherman Hink; her grandchildren Elissa Bassist, Amy and Jeff Todd, Philip and Sharon Bassist, Dena and Brian Miller, and Rachel and Michael Miller. She had a great love for her cousins Frances Wolff, Dorothy Hyman, and Sue Sue Aron; her great grand children, Vincent Miller, Joely Marie Bassist, McKenzie Todd, and Tanner Bassist, and her great nieces and nephews, Lee and Gary Block, Jon Brochstein, Alan and Fran Brochstein, Gary and Lisa Cohen, and Cindy and Matt Taylor.

The family appreciates the great kindness and exceptional care shown to Amy and her family by her long time physician Dr. William Lent, as well as Dr. Gary Lockhart at the Hampton. They also appreciate the comfort and care Amy received from the nurses and staff at the Hampton and from Resolution Hospice.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, December 23, 2009, at Beth Israel Cemetery on Antoine, with Rabbi David Lyon officiating.
