About Ana Luisa Mercedes Valdés Astaburuaga

Peaceful as her hometown and that of her ancestors, La Serena, she was the daughter of the deputy Mr. José Antonio Valdés González and of Mrs. Mercedes Astaburuaga Gómez, granddaughter of the senator for Arauco and Coquimbo Mr. José Antonio Valdés Munizaga and of the distinguished Argentine lady Mrs. Mariana González Bulnes. She was feminine and understanding like few others. I had the good fortune that my childhood was always spent close to it due to my parents' close friendship with the Darrigrandi Valdés couple. Due to this I was able to know her in depth. I think that his most marked moral attributes were tolerance and generosity, meekness, hospitality and love for all things in life. Virtues that derived from his clear intelligence and his noble lineage. She had nine children, the only boy was until recently a distinguished official of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The female daughters educated with the tenderness of Mrs. Anita and the kindness and rectitude of her father Mr. Osvaldo Darrigrandi Rojas, are models of daughters and mothers.

She was generous to the poor who came to her side. She never stopped helping whoever came to her, giving what she had, the profile of human beings is outlined with the expression of all characteristics. Yes, I am sure that Anita was the highest expression of dignity in this life. And not only in the moral order, but also in the social, in their attitudes in the world of daily and simply formal coexistence. In what is called “finesse”, “delicacy”, “social distinction”, which is a value of little magnitude if it is the only one that is possessed, but which, when combined and as a consequence of other, more essential values, acquires great potential and significance. And she was like that, not to deserve praise or awards. It could not be otherwise by its own nature.

Those of us who knew her so much give us the desire to believe that she had a lack of knowledge, a kind of intuition of what the immaterial world was ..., the one that is ... around the corner of this life.
