About Ana María Menendez de Aviles Solis
Ana, within the marriage policy that her father proposed, became the wife of Pedro de Valdés, of the Valdés de Gijón family, who traveled with the Adelantado to America and became in a great sailor and military man. But shortly after her marriage, during one of her husband's absences, she was accused of dishonest relationships by her father-in-law Juan de Valdés and her brother-in-law Gonzalo de Tineo and murdered by both, in order to cleanse the honor of the family. The matter had a tail end: the murderers were punished exemplarily, but even in the 17th century the shame that had fallen on the family for this reason continued to resonate, thus trying to diminish their fame, and which came to be substantiated in lawsuits in the Royal Chancery of Valladolid.
