About Andreas Pietersz, SV/Prog

From Richard Ball

Peters, Andreas - Lubeck. Burgher at Stellenbosch (1708). According to his will 'sonder wettige bloedverwanten nog erfgename'. His heirs were the boy Jantje Pietersz, born at Stellenbosch, 5 years old, living with Pietersz. and Catharina and Angenietie Pietersz, 14 and 12 years old respectively (Testament of 7.4.1708 in Testament O.C. 2:44). They were probably his illegitimate children. ... . Angenietie Pietersz is probably identical with Anna Agnietie Pietersz x Lorens Peters Arensdorf xx Jan Jacobsxxx Johann Jacob Schroeder of Eger.

The above would help identify the baptismal witness of one of Jan Pietersz & Elsie Gerrits' children.

The current archives number for the above will seems to be:

MOOC 7/1/2 44 PIETERSEN, ANDRIES. WILL. 1708

Liquidation and distribution account, MOOC 13/1/1, 79

dated 31 October 1716, of Andries Pietersz

Generale Reek[ening] van den Boedel en [goed]eren naargelaten en met 'er dood ontruijmt bij wijlen Andries Pietersz: ten voordeele van desself[s] [nagela]tene minderjarige Zoon Jantje Pietersz: ...

These accounts note that prior to the final date other amounts had been paid out to Catharina and Agnieta Pietersz as leqacies from this estate. One can assume that they were daughters of Andries Pieterz who had either married or attained their majority through age:

Note:

Heirs listed in such distribution accounts would only have been the legitimate heirs, in this case the legitimate children of the deceased born in wedlock.

Illegitimate children, such as those born to the deceased by slaves, and not legitimised by a later marriage, had legally no father and therefore no claim on a father's estate (but they had a mother, the law recognised, and a legal claim on her estate).

Illegitimate children could be left money by their father but only by testament or deed of gift, and the wills that do this always (at least in my experience so far) always declare that the testator has no other surviving relatives with any right to his estate (these would have been children or their descendants, parents and brothers and sisters, in that order).

In the Weeskamer Joernaalboek, 1 Januarij 1718 (MOOC 18/2)

is found enrolled the ward of the court and his inheritance:

Jan Pietersen ... f. 134.11.-

by Jan 1727 the amount had grown to 192:9:8 and at 31 Dec 1727 it was 201.9.8

On the 7 January 1729 it is noted in the half yearly figures that Jan Pietersz had been paid out his inheritance of f.150 during the previous half year. This would suggest that he had come of age during this period, that is attained the age of 25 years or got married.

(MOOC 1/6, page 119).

Further we have the baptism record of one of Jan Pietersz' children with Elsje Gerrits

Stellenbosch, VC 633, page 79

1755

den 2 Febr:

Johanna Angenieta

de vader - Jan Pieterse (onder Swellendam)

de moeder - Elsie Gertze

de getuijgen - Jacob Schreuder en Johanna Angenieta

We see that the witnesses are Jacob Schreuder en Johanna Angenieta.

Johanna Angenieta was the sister of Jan Pietersz the illegitimate child Andreas Pietersz had with Christina vd Kaap. This link seems to confirm that we are dealing the same Jan Pietersz s.o. Andries Pietersz x Christina vd Kaap.

PETERS ANDREAS. – Lübeck. Burgher at Stellenbosch (1708). According to his will “sonder wettige bloedverwante nog erfgename”. His heirs were the boy Jantje Pietersz born at Stellenbosch, five years old, living with P., and Catharina and Angenitie Pietersz, 14 and 12 years old respectively. (Test. of 7.4.1708 in Test. O.C. 2: 44.) They were probably his illeg.children. Jan, called Jan Pieters van Lübeck ~ Elsje Gerrits. Children: Jan Christoffel (16.8.1750), Johanna Angenieta (2.2.1755) ~ Philipp Raht of Blankenburg (q.v.), Christoffel Andries (25.12.1757), Hester Martinus (4.4.1763). Angenietie P. is probably identical with Anna Agnietie Pietersz ~ (1) 12.3.1713 Lorenz Peters of Arensdorf (q.v.); (2) 2.1.1718 Jan Jacobs (G.R. nr. 371); (3) 14.3.1745 Johann Jacob Schröder of Eger (q.v.).

- Dr. J. Hoge, Personalia of the Germans at the Cape, 1652-1806, Archives Year Book for South African History (Cape Town: Government Printer, Union of South Africa, 1946)

Immigrated to the Cape from Germany. Was first recorded as living in the Cape in 1688. Estimated date of birth around 1675. Parents unknown. He had no legitimate children, but had several illegitimate children with his slaves, some of which bore his name and inherited from him. His will was set up in 1708, but he was still living until 1713 and fathered a child probably just before his death (Johannes Pieters who was baptized in 1714). It is speculated that Maria Pieters was one of the slaves that he had a relationship with. She may have been very young at the time. She then married Pieter Pieterz de Groot from Amsterdam.
