About Cecilia de Groot, SM/PROG
There are uncertainties in her ancestry. Her mother was Maria Pieters. Mansell Upham speculates that Maria Pieters was identical with Maria Van de Caep baptized in January 1677, and that she likely got her name from a relationship with Andreas Pieters. Usually this would mean that Andreas Pieters fathered a child with her. Although her actual date of birth is unknown the 1677 baptism suggests that Maria Pieters (Van de Caep) was probably very young when she gave birth to Cecilia, baptized 1690, and it would mean that Cecilia was more likely the daughter of Andreas Pieters and that Pieter Pieterse De Groot was her stepfather. She could have taken the name of her stepfather through her mother's marriage to him. This was not an uncommon occurrence, however, more evidence is needed before such an assumption can be made.
