About Andreas Friedrich Christopher Schumacher
From Scott Baumann:
Andreas Schumacher, aka Frederick Schumacher, was born in Mecklenburg, Rhena, Germany in 1828. According to family lore, he was a cabin boy and came to America during the 1840's. Upon arriving in the port of New York, he supposedly jumped ship and lived in Brooklyn, New York.
In doing research in the city directories of Brooklyn for the late 1840's and early 1850's, it should be noted that Andreas, known to the family as Frederick Arnold, was very illusive. In these directories he never went by the same name twice. It was obvious he did not want to be found. F. A. Schumacher first appears in the Brooklyn City directories for the year 1852/53 and lists him as living at 107 Clinton Street.
In 1854 he married Annie Haydock from Brooklyn who was a devout Quaker. Due to her affiliation with Frederick she was denounced by the church and records obtained from the church show she had several years outside the church before being allowed back in.
During the civil war, he was a partner or worked for a company named Hermann Boker and Co. They manufactured Cutlery, silver utensils, hardware and guns. He became wealthy due to the Army buying his wares. He moved his family to Clark, New Jersey sometime during the 1860's and lived there until the mid 1880's when he moved to Rahway and had a substantial home on St. George Ave.
The home was torn down in the mid 1960's and St. Thomas Church occupies the location of the former Schumacher home.
His youngest daughter, Annie Pauline, remained in the home and married there and raised her family there.
