He died on April 20, 1821 in Sancti-Spiritus, Cuba.at the age of 51. It was Good Friday and he was taking a rest in the corridor of the Temple of San Francisco between services. Suddenly he became unconscious and soon died. His body was taken to his family's house on San Rafael Number 21. Transit of people coming to see him became so big that it became difficult to move between the streets of San Rafael and Calle Real (Independencia) and the alley El Coco.
