GEDCOM Note

Andrew and Maria (Nolt) Gerber were born and raised in the Mennonite farming community in Hempfield Twp., Lancaster County. They no doubt knew each other as children. Their grandparents were Mennonites who immigrated to Lancaster County in the 1720s and settled in Hempfield Twp.

On December 28, 1791, Andrew Gerber purchased the 144 1/2 acre Hempfield Twp. farm from his parents Jacob and Mary Gerber, who were then living in Donegal Twp: Deed SS-15. This was part of the original homestead carved out of the wilderness by Andrew's grandfather Christian Gerber. Here Andrew and Maria raised their family of eight children.

Hempfield Twp. was divided in 1818. Andrew appears on the 1819 tax assessment in West Hempfield Twp: Ellis and Evans, History of Lancaster County, p. 879.

Andrew Gerber was active in obtaining farm land for his sons. In 1810, Andrew purchased a 258 acre farm in East Donegal Twp. between the Kraybill Mennonite Church and the Donegal Springs Presbyterian Church (Lancaster Deed 2-324). He later sold this land to his sons Jacob and Christian. Photographs of the barn Andrew and his wife Maria built at this location in 1811 and the datestone have been uploaded to this web site. The farm is at H-7 and J-7 at p. 25, Lancaster County Street Map.

In 1832, Andrew purchased a 139 acre farm on Garber Road in West Donegal Twp north of the Bossler Mennonite Church. This farm was sold to his son John Garber.

Birth and Death: gravestone inscription in Mountville Cemetery, Lancaster County. Andrew's age given as 86 years, 7 months, 16 days.

Will is U-1-466 1/2, West Hempfield Twp., Lancaster. In his will, he signed his name "Andrew Gerber". His gravestone (in English) says "Andrew Garber".
