About Andrew Virgil Larimore
Andrew Virgil Larimore, son of the late T. B. and Esther Gresham Larimore passed Virgil Larimore from this life December 31, 1972. Brother Larimore was born February 3, 1879 and was the last of the direct descendants of the T. B. Larimore family. Virgil Larimore was born, lived and died near Florence, Alabama. He was a member of the Mars Hill congregation where he served for many years as a deacon. His father served this congregation and others for years as a gospel preacher. Brother Larimore was a great supporter of Mars Hill Bible School. His father, T. B. Larimore started Mars Hill Academy in 1871 and it continued until 1887. Then in 1947 Mars Hill Bible School was begun in Brother Virgil's home which he gave up willingly. He built himself another home adjacent to the Mars Hill campus. Mars Hill Bible School is one of the best Christian schools among us today with a current enrollment of 777 students. Virgil Larimore helped make this possible having given in excess of two hundred thousand dollars, it is estimated, when the property gifts are considered. Brother Larimore loved the church. He attended the worship services to the end. When his good friend B. C. Goodpasture was in meetings at Eastwood, he always came. He told Brother Goodpasture last fall he probably would not get to hear him preach in a meeting again. When Brother Goodpasture left him he was weeping. He seemed to realize then the time was near. A memorial service was conducted on January 2 at Mars Hill auditorium. It was at this time Jack Wilhelm, president of Mars Hill, stated that Brother Larimore was greatly interested in young people and wanted to see their feet planted on a solid foundation. This was truly one of his great desires. His funeral was conducted at the Mars Hill church building by Kenneth Davis and Larry Gooch. His body was laid to rest in the Florence Cemetery. A memorial fund has been started in honor of Brother Larimore. No doubt many will want to give in memory of this great Christian soldier. If this is your desire, you may send it to Virgil Larimore Memorial Fund, Route 8, Box 344, Florence, Alabama 35630. -Malcolm L. Hill, Gospel Advocate, Feb. 8, 1973, 90.
