Andrew Mansfield, of Lynn

Andrew emigrated from England to Massachusetts in 1636, as part of the Great Migration of the 1630s.

He served as selectman in Lynn, Massachusetts.

"Andrew and his brother John preceded their parents to the New World, as shown by two recorded depositions made by Andrew: At a court held in Ipswich 26 March 1661, Andrew Mansfield, aged about 38 years, made affidavit that he had been an inhabitant of Lynn 'aboute two or three and twentye yeares.' (Lewis and Newhall, History of Lynn, 1865 ed., p. 175). On 30 Nov 1682, before the court at Ipswich, in the case of Brown v. Laughton, Andrew stated (Quarterly Courts of Essex Co., VIII, pp. 256-57) that "about 43 years since [1639], he and his brother John bought of Mr. Manton, so called, a little house and house-lot and planting lot belonging to it in Lynn, and that the next summer their father, Robert, came into the country and they surrendered it up to him.' It seems probable that Andrew and John came to Boston as early as 1636.

"On 26 Mar 1661, being then about 38 years old, he made affidavit to the Court at Ipswich, MA, that he had been an inhabitant of Lynn about 22 or 23 years and in June 1669 "about 49 years old, he testified in court concerning the estate of Frances Axey.

"Andrew was reported as a freeman in Boston in 1636 [Lewis and Newhall]. He settled in Lynn in 1638, on Boston Street, in a section which became known as Mansfield's End. The area that was part of the present Boston Street from the Pine Grove Cemetery westward nearly to Federal Street, including Strawberry Avenue, which was originally part of Boston Street, and was called 'the Country Road.'

"Andrew was very active in town affairs. He was made freeman 8 July 1647 [?]. He was a selectman, was on committees for laying out roads and settling land disputes. He served as trial juror and on Grand Jury 1650-1677. He was called 'sergeant' from 31 Mar 1663, indicating the confidence that the people had for his legal ability. 'There are many letters on file in the clerk of the courts office of Essex County in his clear legiable handwriting showing his ability and that the esteem in which he was held was well merited. He was deputy to the General Court from 1680-1683 inclusive. By reference to the Court records it will be seen that he was entrusted by that body with important commissions.' [Moulton]

"Andrew lived in Beverly for a while after he married his third wife, Elizabeth Walton Conant, of Beverly, in 1682.

"Andrew's will was dated 1 Jun 1679, with a codicil dated at Boston 19 Nov 1683. It seems that while attending the General Court, he was taken suddenly and seriously ill, as the codicil was witnessed by members of the court then in session. The exact date of his death is not known but the inventory of his estate was returned to the Probate Court 28 Nov 1683, nine days after the codicil was made."

Andrew was born in England about 1623 and came to Boston in 1636, thence to Lynn in 1638. He and his brother John preceeded their parents to New England as shown by two depositions made by Andrew. On March 26, 1661, claiming to be then about 38 years old, he made affidavit to the Court at Ipswich, that he had been an inhabitant of Lynn about 22 or 23 years, and in June 1669, he testified in court concerning the estate of Frances Axley, saying he was about 49 years old. Andrew became a freeman in 1645, and was very active in Town affairs. He served as selectman, on road and land committees. He also served as trial juror and on Grand Jury 1650-1677. The clerk of the courts office of Essex County has many letters on file in his clear legiable handwriting. He was deputy to the General Court from l880-1883 inclusive.

Andrew was married three times. His first wife was Bethiah, who he married about 1650. Andrew and Bethiah had eight children, all were born in Lynn. Bethiah died July 2, 1672. Her maiden name might have been Gedney (Lynn Historical Register 1913), or Townsend (Warner-Harrington Genealogy). His second wife, married June 4, 1673, was Mary Neal, widow of John and the only daughter of Frances Lawes of Salem. She died June 27, 1681. His third wife, married January 10, 1681-82, was Elizabeth Conant, widow of Lot and daughter of William and Elizabeth Walton of Marblehead. Two of her sons had previously married two of Andrew's daughters.

Andrew's will was dated June 1, 1679, with a codicil added at Boston November 19, 1683. It seems that while attending the General Court, he was taken suddenly ill, as the codicil was witnessed by the members of the court. The exact date of his death is not known, but the inventory of his estate was returned November 28, 1683.
