PERSONALITY SKETCHES
Andrew May
The Gentile Man from Power
When an idea strikes Andrew May, representative of Power County, he expresses it quickly, and frequently, without digesting the substance with which the thought is related. He asks questions and makes motions that are often foreign to the issue.
For such hair-trigger statements he is somewhat feared by members of his Republican Party. Sometimes his tact is not at all that it could be. For instance, when he knew how all the Republicans were going to vote on the Boy Scout bill, there were looks of amazement and anguish in Republican ranks and smiles on the faces of the Democrats.
Republican colleagues were quick to point out the Boy Scouts were not a political issue, the the damage had been done. A cat was out of the bag that had never been in the bag, and the grinning Mr. May had pulled the string.
Despite his moments of unpredictable antics, the Gentleman from Power is seldom in the dog house long. He comes up smiling from every defeat. When he makes a faux pas he subsides gently and bobs up speedily on another tangent.
If May has any sacred cows they have not been trotted out yet. He smites right and left without regard for person, party, or district. He does it innocently enough and takes the procedure as a gorgeous comedy.
The Power county representative is a member pof the legislative triumvirate--or at least a trio, although it has never been together in the statehouse. Andrew May is a brother of Senator R. C. May of Minidoka county. Joe May, formerly a senator from Power county, is another brother.
Andrew served in two other sessions, 1915 and 1921. The blook of youthful vigor and alertness is now gone. May is 67. He is a member of the L.D.S. church, father of seven children, and for many years a sounty commissioner.
