I was born in the Parish of Chievely, Berkshire, England, June 1, 1832. My father's name was George May who was born in Courage, Berkshire, about 1807. He died in 1852 in Carterwell near Council Bluffs IA of cholera. My mother's name was Hannah Hobson, of the same place. Died at Old winter Quarters, July 4, 1852, of Consumption. There were nine children as follows [Note: James only listed eight siblings]:
