About Andrew McAllister, II

Andrew McAllister, Jr., the second of two sons of Andrew McAllister (William2, Angus1) and Rebecca Robinson, b. at Pembroke, NH. He d. Feb. 4, 1847 at Morgan County, OH (g.s.) Per his gravestone he died at the age of 78 years, 8 months and 16 days, indicating he was b. May 19, 1768.
On June 25, 1796 of record at Pembroke, NH and called of Colebrook, but errantly written in his marriage record as "Andrew W. Collester," Andrew m. Abigail Rogers then of Bow, NH, whose parents have not been identified. Some descendant family claim Abigail d. in 1863 at Thayer, Iowa while residing with the family of her dau. Mary. The latter is not the case (see her memorial.)
In the August 1790 census Andrew's father and older brother William were one of seven pioneer settlers of the town of Colburn (subsequently renamed Colebrook) along the east side of the Connecticut River in upper northwest New Hampshire. In about 1800 father Andrew and his son William built and operated Colebrook's first grist and sawmill and were still residents of Colebrook in the August 1810 census.
On the other hand, following marriage Andrew McAllister, Jr. located directly northwest across the Connecticut River at Lemington, Vermont, the 2nd town south of the Vermont-Canadian border. At Lemington only Andrew's two oldest children are of birth record, but subsequent census records and gravestones indicate the first seven children were b. at Lemington from 1799 through 1815.
The year 1816 was the northeast United State's famous "Year without a Summer," the result of a combination of atmospheric conditions caused in part by the April 1815 eruption of Mt. Tambora at present-day Indonesia. New England was particularly impacted by unusual severe cold weather during the summer of 1816 that prevented annual crop production. While the following year 1817 was somewhat better regarding raising crops, a significant portion of the population of the New England states migrated by 1820 to the upper midwest including to Ohio and Indiana. In 1815 Andrew McAllister, Sr and son William relocated from Colebrook, NH to Washington County in southeastern Ohio. By 1817-18 Andrew McAllister, Jr. and wife Abigail relocated from Lemington, VT to Morgan County, OH.
Andrew and Abigail (Rogers) McAllister, Jr. had the following nine children, the eldest seven b. at Lemington, VT, the youngest two at Morgan County, OH:
• i. David McAllister, b. May 25, 1799. This child, the family's first recorded birth at Lemington, is an enigma. He either followed his parents to OH where he married a wife named Hannah, had many children but whose surviving children went to great lengths to claim he was born in a southern state not remotely close to New England. OR he is the David McAllister b. in 1799 at Vermont who m. Lydia Page Paine, raised a family at Windsor County, Vermont, and died there in the 1870s.
• ii. Diantha McAllister, b. May 28, 1801; m. Mar. 11, 1830 at Morgan Co., OH (by B. Allen), Henry Karns, or Karnes. Unfortunately her fate has not been found. Her sister Deborah (McAllister) Williams named a dau. b. in 1844 Diantha Karnes Williams.
• iii. Samuel McAllister, b. circa 1803-4 and likely the son shown in the 1820 census at Morgan Co., OH age 16-18; no further clear record for him can be found.
• iv. Homer F. McAllister, b. Feb. 11, 1806, d. Aug. 22, 1885 at Morgan Co., AL (g.s.); m. 1) Sept. 18, 1835 at Morgan Co., OH, Elizabeth Kirkpatrick, who d. bef. June 1870; m. 2) bef. 1875, the widow Eleanor [Wixson?], who was living in June 1880.
• v. Fanny McAllister, b. Nov 9, 1807; m. Return Jonathan Meigs Sharp and had at least 8 children b. at Morgan County, OH. Following their enumeration in the 1880 census of Morgan County, OH, they purportedly relocated to Iowa where Jonathan d. in 1884 and Fanny in 1892.
• vi. Abigail McAllister, b. Nov. 8, 1812, d. Jan. 19, 1886 at Ozark, AR (g.s.); m. Apr. 4, 1833 at Morgan Co., OH, Charles Francis Alden, b. circa 1803 at NY. He d. betw, 1856 and 1860 at Clarke Co. Iowa. Six known children of the family.
• vii. Deborah McAllister, b. June 13, 1815 at Lemington, VT, d. Apr. 27, 1895 at Kansas (g.s.); m. Nov. 9, 1837 at Muskingum Co., OH, Curtis Williams, who d. before June 1860. Five children b. at Muskingum before the widow Deborah relocating to Iowa. The widow and the surviving children later moved to southeast KS.
• viii. Mary E. "Polly" McAllister, b. Feb. 2, 1820 at Morgan County, OH, d. Apr. 30, 1888 at Thayer, Iowa (g.s.); m. William E. Lawrence who d. Jan. 1, 1875 at Thayer, Iowa (g.s.) Six identified children of the family.
• ix. William McAllister, b. Mar. 11, 1823 and d. July 10. 1907 at Kingman Co., KS (g.s.); m. Nov 5, 1842 at Morgan Co., OH, Emeline Davis (by Rev. Aaron Edwards), who d. at Kingman Co., KS in 1892 (g.s.) Five children of the family.
