ANDREW MCDONALD DIED SUDDENLY Drops Dead As he Is About To Leave Office Friday Afternoon HEAD OF BIG MANUFACTURING FIRM Had Suffered From Organic Ailment -- Funeral To Be Held Monday
Following an all afternoon conference with officials of the A. Y. McDonald company, of which he was president, Andrew Y. McDonald dropped dead as he was about to leave his office for his home on Friday afternoon about 5:30 o'clock. The sudden death of the head of one of Dubuque's most important manufacturing firm caused a shock to business and social circles. Mr. McDonald had just left a meeting of members of his family associated with him in the manufacturing business and had started walking from his desk in the main office to the door leading to the street when he fell. His son, brother and sisters rushed to where he had fallen only to learn that death had already occurred. Recently Mr. McDonald, after suffering for nearly four years from a serious organic ailment, had begun to resume his duties in the business and his place in the social world with the result that his family and friends find his sudden death in the face of such marked improvement a serious blow. Took Father's Place Mr. McDonald belonged to the second generation of Dubuque business men, having taken over the head of the business established by his father, A. Y. McDonald, after the latter's death. He was born in Dubuque on Dec. 24, 1868, and his entire life was spent in the city of his birth with the exception of his years in college and traveling. After receiving his preliminary education in the schools of Dubuque, Mr. McDonald enrolled in Cornell university, from which institution he was graduated. While attending the eastern university he became affiliated with Zeta Psi. On his graduation he returned to Dubuque and entered the business which was organized by his father. From the start his presence in the business world was felt and on the death of his father he assumed the presidency of the A. Y. McDonald company which office he held until his death. He leaves to mourn the passing of his death his wife Abby Lyon McDonald; three sons, Delos L., A. Y. Jr., and George, and one daughter, Abby L.; three sisters, Martha E. McDonald, Mary H. McDonald, and Mrs. Ira G. Whitney, and one brother, John Manderson, also survive. The funeral will be held from the family residence, 1209 Prairie street, Monday.
