About Andrew Moore

From "A History of the Andrew Moore Family of Jefferson County, Pennsylvania", compiled by Jude Fischer, 1984.

Andrew was born in Ireland in 1788 (or 24 Apr 1790), County Derry. He came to America with his parents @ 1800. He married Margaret Eakins in Centre County, PA @1818. He was a soldier in the War of 1812.

Andrew's family settled for a few years not far from Phildelphia, PA, in Chester or Lancaster County. When he was 16, the family moved to Nitanny Valley in Centre and Clinton Counties. He was a soldier in the War of 1812.

Andrew bought a farm near Bellefonte, which is now a part of Centre County. He lived there from his marriage until 1834. During this time, he farmed and worked at Washington Furnace.

Andrew came with wife and 6 children to the Beechwoods settlement in Washington twp, Jefferson County, PA, around 1834. His reason for moving was that the Nitanny Valley "wasn't a fit place to raise a family." Two more children were born in Beechwoods. His farm was originally rough wilderness, and he had to cut a road through the forest to the spring near which he built his house and out buildings. Cattle, sheep and hogs roamed the range, so it was necessary to build substantial fences around every field that was cultivated. In addition, Andrew made sugar from the maple trees on his property. This farm was located near the current DuBois - Jefferson County Airport.

He was age 89 years, 3 months when he died. He was buried beside his wife.
