About James Lindsay Moore

In 1880, James lived in Washington, Jefferson Co., PA or in Upper Tyrone, Fayette Co., PA

from "A History of the Andrew Moore Family of Jefferson County, Pennsylvania", compiled by Jude Fischer, 1984.

About 1834, James went with his parents and their 5 younger children to Jefferson County, PA. Not long after that, he went to Elk County, PA, where he met and married his wife. James and Sarah lived in Elk County for 10 years before moving to Jefferson County.

In 1848, James bought a tract of land in Washington twp, to which he had to cut a road. The timber was supposed to be so thick that it took him 8 days to chop out enough so that he could get through with his team of oxen.

James was a farmer, but he also converted his own timber into square lumber, and engaged in speculating to a limited extent. He joined the Baptist church early in his life.

In the 1850 census, James and his wife were listed in Winslow twp, with 5 children. In the 1870 census, the family is listed in Washington twp.

The 1st Moore family reunion was held in 1888, in the large orchard on James' farm. The family also celebrated the 50th wedding anniversary of James and Sarah. Over 300 people attended this event. The Hometown School was later built on this site; it is now the Hormtown Community Center and is where the Moore reunion is helf annually.

After Sarah died in 1892, James lived with his children.
