Biographical Sketch

Andrew's parents were well-to-do farmers in Middleton, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. At the age of eighteen Andrew learned the trade of a tailor, which he pursued successfully for many years. He married Sarah L. Sleeper (1816 - 1900) of Vincentown, New Jersey. Scott joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was called by Jedediah M. Grant to travel and preach the gospel in Philadelphia and surrounding country. Later, he filled another mission to the southwestern part of New Jersey.

In 1845, Scott traveled with a company of Saints to Nauvoo, Hancock County, Illinois, where he endured the mobbings and tribulations that were heaped upon the Saints there. He returned to the East to get his family, but his wife refused to move. In the spring of 1850, he started west once more with some of the children. He located temporarily in Pottawattamie County, Iowa, where he married Sarah Ann Roe (1832 - 1904), with whom he had six sons and five daughters. The Scott family reached the Salt Lake Valley on 26 September 1851 with the Morris Phelps Company, and located at Provo.

Scott served as Bishop of the Provo Second Ward from 1861 to 1874, was in the 34th Quorum of Seventies, and led an ox train of 48 wagons across the plains in 1866. A successful farmer and an importer of sheep, he built the Provo Woolen Millsto to manufacture woollen cloth; he also manufactured brooms and engaged in bee raising and silk culture. He was a nursery man who is credited with having planted the first fruit trees in Utah county. In 1859, when the Deseret Agriculture and Manufacturing Society of Utah County was organized in Provo, Scott became a director and one of the most active members of that society.

Scott served as the Superintendent of construction of the fort wall around Provo in 1854. He built the first schoolhouse in Second Ward; the first Utah county courthouse; the Provo meeting house; and also constructed canyon roads, bridges and dams on the Provo River. He served as Provo City recorder; assessor and councilman; and mayor of Provo six years. In 1860 Andrew had a household of 12, a real wealth of $1,200, and a personal wealth of $800. In 1870 he had a household of 11, a real wealth of $1,800, and a personal wealth of $967.
