ANDREW E. THORBERG Morton Prairie Roots 1776-1976; Page 768
Andrew E. Thorberg was born in Ronberg, Norway on May 20, 1857 and came alone to Davenport, Iowa in 1876. Here he worked and attended school for a year to become acquainted with the English language. In 1878 he then struck out with the West Coast in mind but Mandan and the surrounding area caught his eye and here he remained beginning his western life as a trapper. And in this role he became well acquainted with the countryside and its resources.

Thorberg's outdoor life gave him ample opportunities to observe the soil and natural resources of the area and formed the foundation for his firm belief in possibilities.

He married Ida K. Johnson, born March 1, 1864 in Drogsta, Sodermanland, Sweden to Jonas Eric Anderson and Clara Karoline Carlson, and after he established a home in Mandan he conducted experimental work in his garden with fruits and trees and from these successful ventures stemmed his determination to secure Mandan as the site of the government operated dry land Experiment Station which was completed in 1915.

He became clerk in the clothing firm of Cummins and Tubbs, and in 1891 became a partner in the firm which operated for many years under the name of Cummins, Thorberg, and Theis. He also served as postmaster from 1890 to 1894. He disposed of his store stock in 1916 and investigative farm lands - bought Peter Hendrickson a cousin - Leonard Johnson - son Alfred Johnson.

Thorberg was one of the founders of the Morton County Fair Association in 1895 and in 1893 he was in charge of in Indian exhibit at the Chicago World's Fair. He started the first commercial club in Mandan. At Washington, D. C. He represented Mandan, endeavoring to get the Indian School there.

He took a lively interest in political campaigns always anxious that the best man represent Mandan in Congress.

Eight children were born to them: Eric A., Clara, George E., Harry S., Clifford A., three of whom are living, Robert V. Thorberg, Morehead, Minnesota, Mrs. H. L. Diebert (Ida) of Largo, Florida and Mrs. John (Lilly) Kleinschmitt of Mandan.

Mr. Thorberg died in 1921 at the age of 64.
