About Andrew Wager

Andrew Wager was baptized at East Hampton, Long Island 24 July 1720, likely indicating that he was born there, probably just after the family's move from Boston to Long Island.

Andrew married his stepsister, Elizabeth Dickerson, 21 Jan. 1743 at Southold, Long Island, on the same date that his sister, Elizabeth Wager, married Thomas Daines. Not long after their marriage, Andrew and Elizabeth moved to Morris Co., New Jersey along with her 4 brothers, probably about 1745. I located Andrew Wager of the Township of Roxberey (sic) on a list of Freeholders for Morris Co., NJ 31 August 1752. ("Genealogical Magazine of New Jersey," Vol. 16, page 65)

In 1739, Morris Co., NJ included what are now Morris, Sussex and Warren counties, containing 1,360 acres and about 2,000 people. Morristown was its chief town and county seat. In "Chester, New Jersey, A Scrapbook of History, 1713-1971," Frances Greenidge, I learned that Chester, NJ was known early as "Roxbury" or "Roxberry," later as "Black River, part of Lebanon," then as "Black River, part of Roxbury Township." It wasn't until 1799 that it was called "Chester Township." Further, much of what is now the Chester area of the county was sold to men from Southold, Long Island in the 1730's - families such as Luce/Luse, Ogden, Swayze, and Brown. Many of these were third generation Long Islanders.

Andrew Wager is listed in the Revolutionary Census of NJ, 1778-1780 as resident of Roxbury, Morris Co., along with sons Andrew, Jr. and Charles. He is also listed in the March, 1779 rateables list for Roxbury Township, Morris Co., NJ with 110 acres of improved land, 3 horses and 5 cows. In the February 1780 list the amount of acreage is unchanged; he then had the same number of horses, 4 horned cattle rather than 5 and, in addition, 1 hog. Sons Andrew, Jr. and father Charles are also listed; these are the only Wagers in Roxbury Township and Morris Co.

An Andrew Wager was one of two men who performed the inventory, 1 Oct 1781, of the estate of Abraham Schellenger of Roxbury, Morris Co. The other was a David Brown; all were of Roxbury Township.

Andrew died about 1788, according to the Dickerson text. I have found no record of his death or burial in Morris Co., NJ records, despite researching at the genealogical library there at Morristown.
