Andrew Yu-Yue Tsu 朱友漁

Y. Y. Tsu, Chinese Episcopal bishop known for his work during the Sino-Japanese war as executive representative of the House of Bishops of the Chinese Episcopal Church. He later directed the Church's central office in China and served as executive secretary of its Home Mission Board. Upon his retirement in 1950, he went to live in the United States. [BDRC]

Bishop Andrew Yu-Yue Tsu was an Anglican leader in China for many years until the Communist takeover. He was known in World War II as the "Bishop of the Burma Road," because of his efforts to befriend Allied troops traveling the international highway that ran through his district.

A 1904 graduate of St. John's Episcopal University in Shanghai, he came to the United States in 1909 to study at the General Theological Seminary in New York and Columbia University.

He later taught at St. John's University and served as religious director of Peking Union Medical College.

In 1940, he was consecrated an Episcopal bishop in Shanghai and was named Assistant Bishop of Hong Kong and Bishop of Kunming, where he began his Burma Road work.

After World War II, Bishop Tsu worked to negotiate the return of church properties seized by the Japanese during the war.

In 1946, he was appointed general secretary of the National Office of the House of Bishops in Nanjing. Three years later he fled before the Communist advance and moved to the United States, where he worked in the Episcopal Diocese of Pennsylvania for 18 years.
