Andries "Andre" Pienaar (1949 - 2002)

Brief overview:

Andre (52), was murdered when he entered the house, the burglars, who were waiting for him, opened fire and wounded him several times. Pienaar managed to get out of the house, but was hit again. He collapsed and died near his vehicle.

The attack took place late on Sunday afternoon on the farm Mooitoekoms near Viljoenskroon. It was reported by neighbours on Monday. The first arrests were on Tuesday night, Captain Rosa Benade said in a statement on Wednesday.

Benade said Pienaar and his wife Nelia apparently arrived home at about 17:00 on Sunday afternoon after visiting friends.

  • Northern Free State police have arrested eight men in connection with the murder of farmer Andre Pienaar on Sunday.

  • Judge Beckley sentenced Pule Shadrack Maimane (19), and the three minor boys aged 15 and 16 to 12 years on the charge of burglary with intent to rob and robbery with aggravated circumstances sentenced and 12 years on the charge of murder. Effectively, they will serve 18 years in prison.
  • In September Judge Beckley sentenced Alfred Somfula (20), on the charges of murder and rape two to life in prison, 15 years in prison on the charge of burglary with intent to rob and robbery with aggravated circumstances, and five years in prison on the two charged with violations of the firearms law.
  • Petrus Kopane (22), received the same sentences, except on the charges of offences of the firearms law for which he was sentenced to just two years in prison.
