About Angelina Gilbert

In 1838, Angelina went to live with her brother William Merrill at

Winchester, IL. Her (Angelina's? Or Angelina's mother Jane's?) four older brothers had been lost at sea. Her (Angelina's or Jane's?) younger brother, Stephen, came to Astoria, Illinois.

Angelina went to school in Winchester and met and married Charles there.

According to her obituary, contracted cholera suddenly on 31 July 1851, and was dead by sunrise.

One of Evelyn's handwritten pages may indicate they were married in Jacksonville, Illinois

The Lewistown Democrat

Cholera scourge in Astoria in 1851.

...

Mrs. Angeline D. Gilbert, wife of Charles Gilbert, and sister of Mrs. Judge Cummings and Wm. M. Durrell, was taking suddenly ill on the 31st of July, and, notwithstanding the best of care, she died on the morning of the first day of August about sunrise. Soon after her death Zachariah Gilbert and his child Harrison were reported down with cholera. One died on the third day of August and the other on the fifth. Dr. D. W. c. Allen went to visit his cholera patients in the country on the morning of July 16th. He came home just before noon and had to be lifted into his house. He died before night. His little girl, Mary C. Allen, died July 20th. Tow little innocents, Edward J and Jane E. Jacobs, died on the 20th of June and the 25th of July respectively. They were laid side by side in the Astoria cemetery before they realized that "There are more sad and cruel things than death, Between the cradle and the open grave."
